
Richard D. Knight: (National Number 9410) December 3, 1946 - November 23, 2019
Richard Dean Knight, age 72, died November 23, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Always selfless and interested in serving the needs of others. He, his wife Colleen, and son Shane volunteered with the National Ski Patrol. Dick and Colleen volunteered as Alpine Patrollers for a total of 41 years beginning at Mount Mancelona and then moving to Schuss Mountain in Northern Michigan. During his patrol time as a Senior Alpine Patroller, Dick held the position of Northern Michigan Region Youth Advisor. He was also a first aid instructor for the Red Cross, a WEC Instructor and Outdoor Emergency Care instructor for 31 years for the Region. In 1989 he was voted Schuss Mountain Patroller of the year and was also given his NSP National Number of 9410 in 2001. Dick also received a purple merit star from The National Ski Patrol for saving a life.
For Dick Knight skiing and patrolling was a family deal. His wife Colleen and son Shane were patrollers. He enjoyed skiing with his grandchildren, Danielle, Hunter, Skyler, Amy, Ashley, and Lexi and his son Chad. During the ski season, Dick's dad, Dean, and his mom, Florence, would also spend at least one weekend skiing with the patrol at Schuss. Dick’s dedication to family and service were significant in his life. There is a legend that the ski trail called "Good Knight" at Schuss Mtn was named for the family, and He is now remembered fondly by fellow patrollers at Schuss and across the Northern Michigan Region.
